How to avoid common mistakes when moving

Smooth out your moving process with these five tips and tricks

Moving home is exciting! But it often also includes a lot of planning and coordinating the many different aspects between your current home and your new home, all of which can feel overwhelming.

Whether you’re downsizing or simply want a change of scenery, we’re here to help you avoid common moving mistakes.

What to consider when moving

1. Keep your move and packing organised

Create a moving to-do list, remember to add things like moving your utilities and changing your address. As you’re packing up your belongings, try to keep your boxes organised by room. Pack heavy items, such as a stack of books, into smaller boxes, as this will make them easier to lift and carry.

2. Label your boxes

In addition to keeping your packing organised by room, label your boxes appropriately so that once you’re in your new place, you’ll be able to find items more easily. Where possible, place your labelled boxes in the appropriate room, e.g. boxes labelled with kitchen utensils in the kitchen so that you can immediately unpack your items in the right room.

Pro-tip: If you want to take your organising and packing to the next level, keep a list of which items you’ve packed into which box. In this way, you can simply check your list when you’re looking for something, instead of having to look through dozens of boxes.

3. Book your removal in advance

As removal companies get booked up quickly, it’s important to research and book them far enough in advance so that you can get the days you want. Many people choose to move over the weekend or at the end of the month, making these time slots a popular option for home movers.

4. Hire the right removal company

There are many benefits to hiring a removal company. From having a helping hand packing things up, to moving and packing professionals being able to advise on best-practice. Additionally, you gain easy access to moving equipment, avoid (back) injuries and can often insure your belongings against damage or loss.

Ensure you’ve set up your internet and utilities

Last, but certainly not least, as your move-in date comes closer, check that your new home is set up with everything you need, from hot water to internet. Are you able to transfer your current utility accounts to your new home? Have you changed your address or added a forwarding address so that you don’t miss any important mail?

Then, once you’ve moved in, take a picture of both your electricity and gas meter readings and provide them to your energy company.

Although this is by no means a complete list, these tips will hopefully help smoothen out your moving process.
